It's YouTube

I made a YouTube account and uploaded some Frontier Elite II videos. I could never get into Elite 1. It has a more fun universe, but less things to do, and kind of dated graphics / UI. Frontier (Amiga version) still works well graphically I think, perhaps because of its flat style. The Archimedes version looks interesting because it's not player centric. I also need to check out Escape Velocity, because a top down Elite clone looks like an appealing thing.

Also noodled on my Elite ship paper craft page.

I have to say, your Elite II paper crafts and YouTube videos got me strangely fascinated. I've never given Elite II so much as an cursory glance, which is weird because I'm a huge sci-fi nerd. Very intriguing, sir! Thanks for the morning escapades :)

also Starscape: http://www.moonpod.com/English/about_ss.php
for 2d (though less open as it has an end game).

I did play a little FFE a while back, but didn't like it. The new ship designs in FFE were unfaithful to the Elite aesthetic, nonsensical and... just plain bad - not even bad-good or ugly-pretty. On top of that goes the awful textures, and openGL hardly makes them better. Worse, I'd say. Somehow high resolution turds offends me more.

Using backgrounds in the GUI can work, X-Com did it really well, but in the case of FFE it just made things gritty and hard to read, without adding narration like the X-Com BG's did.

I also played some Oolite, but it was way too slow (snailing through friendly encounters). I like how it handled the jet exhausts though.

I've seen the MoonPod thing, but never got around to playing it.

Now that you are on YT maybe you could post some art process videos.
Just saying...

Yeah, I know. I've been looking into it, but haven't launched my ass into creative orbit yet.
